Public Debate

The New Forest needs informed, open and honest debate. Decisions about its future should not be made quietly, narrowly or without proper scrutiny. Public debate helps ensure the Forest’s habitats, commoning traditions, landscape, communities and long-term health are properly considered.

The New Forest is shaped by many organisations, policies and interests. Public bodies, land managers, commoners, residents, businesses, conservation groups and visitors all have a stake in its future. Their needs do not always align.

That is why public debate matters.

The New Forest Association believes decisions affecting the Forest should be transparent, well-informed and open to challenge. The Forest is too important to be treated as a technical matter for committees alone. People who know, live in, work in and care for the Forest must have opportunities to understand proposals, ask questions and make their voices heard.

Public debate is not about opposition for its own sake. It is about better decisions. When proposals are tested openly, risks can be identified earlier, assumptions can be challenged and wider consequences can be properly considered.

The Association has a long history of speaking up where decisions could harm the Forest. That includes planning proposals, transport policies, recreational pressure, habitat management, climate resilience, commoning, landscape change and the responsibilities of public bodies.

We support open discussion that is evidence-based, respectful and focused on the long-term interests of the Forest. We also support public meetings, consultations, committee scrutiny, published responses and accessible information that help people understand the issues and take part.

We oppose decision-making that is rushed, poorly explained or too narrow in its view of the Forest. The New Forest cannot be properly protected if decisions consider only one site, one organisation, one policy, or one short-term benefit at a time.

The wider picture matters.

The Forest’s open landscape, villages, coast, roads, habitats, commoning economy and surrounding communities are all connected. A decision made in one place can have consequences elsewhere.

The New Forest Association will continue to raise concerns, provide evidence, ask difficult questions, and encourage wider public involvement when the Forest’s future is at stake.

The Forest cannot speak for itself. By supporting informed public debate, we help give it a clearer, stronger and more independent voice.

Join us and help ensure the future of the New Forest is openly discussed, properly understood and carefully protected.
